Hey, so I know I’m a little late with this one…. What with being ill for what felt like forever, and the gorgeous sunshine that has been around in the UK recently, this one took a little longer than intended to get to you!
It’s also just a tad different from the inspiration pic – here’s the inspiration:
Here’s my version:
Quick game of spot the difference? So first, yeah it’s YELLOW, not red. It’s also got lots of teeny tiny polka dots rather than the HUGE dots that originally attracted me to this top. Ummm…. yeah. I’m not sure why! I went into the shop, found the bright red large polka dot poplin, but somehow came out with small yellow. I think I was just really feeling yellow that day…. But it’s still a polka dot, and it’s still peplum so that works, right? Oh, but it’s not finished….
There’s a good reason it’s not finished. I really don’t think peplum suits me! I tried it , got half way, but in the end I’m not going to finish making a top that I just don’t think I’m ever going to wear. So therefore, Recre-Kate fail!
Annoyingly I already told you I was going to make it, so I had to show you! Apart from those pretty major changes it’s reasonably similar. I drafted the pattern myself (secretly a bit proud). This involved changing the darts on my block into princess seams! I could have kept them as darts, but I wanted to try a new technique. I’m really pleased with how it turned out. These are actually my first princess seams and I’m really pleased with how well they fit – much nicer than pointy darts.
I took my inspiration for the peplum from the photo (see it did inspire me ) and did a simple gathered peplum, rather than messing around with mini circle skirts. I was worried it might be a bit bulky round the waist but actually I as pleasantly surprised and thought it looked ok. the main problem is that the peplum is too short -another reason it’s unfinished, the proportions are just really off. I tried to fit it all into a metre of fabric and turns out I needed more -I need a rap on the knuckles for trying to be cheap
So there you go, a sewing mistake I’d have loved to have kept hidden – hence why it’s taken me sooo long to show you. However, every cloud has a silver lining – and this silver lining is learning how to turn darts into princess seams – I have a tutorial if anyone is interested?
